Cryptographic Hash
A fixed-length fingerprint derived from arbitrary input via a one-way function.
A cryptographic hash function turns arbitrary input — a string, a file — into a fixed-length value that cannot practically be reversed and that changes drastically when the input changes. SHA-256 is the modern default; MD5 and SHA-1 are still used for non-security checksums but are broken for collision resistance.
